They even eat carrion, which is dead animal meat. They can even eat food waste left by humans. This versatile diet helps them survive in many different places.

Scientists have studied ravens for a very long time. Carl Linnaeus first described the species in 1758. He did this in his famous book called Systema Naturae. He used the name Corvus corax for them.

This name comes from the Latin word for raven. The name corax comes from a Greek word. The English word raven also comes from old Germanic languages. For hundreds of years, people have watched these birds closely. They have even been part of many old stories and art.

There are many different types of ravens called subspecies. Most experts agree there are 11 subspecies in the world.

Some ravens look a little different from others. For example, ravens in the Himalayas are very large. They have very long throat feathers called hackles.

Ravens in North Africa are actually the smallest subspecies. They have very short throat feathers and oily feathers. In the sun, their black feathers show iridescence. This means they shine with blue or purple colors.

Ravens are much more than just black birds. They are famous for being unusually intelligent. They can perform notable feats of problem-solving.

Many cultures have treated them with great respect. In Scandinavia and ancient Ireland, they were special. People in Bhutan and Siberia also held them in high regard. Some cultures even saw them as spiritual figures or gods.
