It is also called the Congo grey parrot. These birds are famous for being very smart. They are part of a group called Psittacidae. Many people keep them as pets because they can mimic sounds. They are highly social and love to live in large flocks. This social life is very important for their happiness. Without friends, they can become very stressed and sad.

In the wild, these birds follow a busy way of life. They mostly eat fruit, nuts, and seeds. They also enjoy eating flowers, tree bark, and even small snails.

When it is time to have babies, they find a hole in a tree. The female lays three to five eggs in the nest. She sits on them for 30 days to keep them warm. Her mate brings her food while she waits. The young chicks stay in the nest for 12 weeks. They grow strong before they finally fly away.

A scientist named Carl Linnaeus first described the bird in 1758. He was a naturalist from Sweden. He gave the bird its official name, Psittacus erithacus. At first, he thought the birds came from a place called Guinea. Later, people found they actually came from Ghana in West Africa. For a long time, the Timneh parrot was thought to be a type of grey parrot. However, a study in 2007 showed it is actually a separate species. This was because of differences in their bodies and genes.

Grey parrots have very specific features and numbers. Adults usually have a wingspan of about 80 centimeters. Their feathers are mostly grey with white edges. They also have a bright red tail and a black beak.

In the wild, they live for about 23 years. In homes, they can live much longer, up to 60 years. Sadly, their numbers in the wild are dropping fast. In Ghana, the population fell by 90 to 99 percent since 1992. Many birds are taken for the pet trade or lose their forest homes.

You might know other birds that make sounds, but these parrots are special. They can learn to use words to label things. One famous parrot named Alex could name colors and shapes. He could even combine words to make new ones.

If he saw an apple, he might say "banerry" for banana and cherry. They even show kindness by sharing food with their friends. They are some of the most intelligent birds on Earth.
