These bright birds live in many places like rainforests and coastal woodlands. They are common along the eastern coast from Queensland to South Australia. Some people even say they are the most common bird in Australia. Because they are so widespread, they are not in danger of disappearing.

Rainbow lorikeets have a very special way of eating. They mostly eat fruit, pollen, and nectar from flowers. Their tongues are specially made for this job. The end of the tongue has a small part used to gather nectar. They like to eat from eucalyptus and sago palms. They also enjoy fruits like mangoes and papayas.

People have studied these birds for a long time. A German naturalist named Johann Friedrich Gmelin first listed them in 1788. He thought they came from a place called the Moluccas. Later, in 1916, Gregory Mathews changed their home location to Botany Bay. The name for their group, or genus, was started by James Francis Stephens in 1826.

These birds often live in pairs for a long time. They make nests in hollow trees or even in rock holes. The female bird sits on the eggs to keep them warm. This takes about 25 days. Sometimes, these birds can be a problem for people. They might eat fruit from orchards or make a lot of noise. In some places, they are even called pests.
