They belong to a group called Platycercus. This name means "broad-tailed" or "flat-tailed." This describes the shape of their tails. These birds live in many places like forests and woodlands. They also live in farmlands and suburban gardens. You will not find them in the outback.

Some rosellas have even moved to New Zealand and Norfolk Island.

Most rosellas eat seeds and fruit for food. They use their feet to hold their food while they eat.

These birds also like to bathe in puddles of water. In the wild, they are cavity nesters. This means they build nests in holes in old trees. The female sits on the eggs to keep them warm. This takes about 21 days. The male helps by feeding the female during this time. The chicks have white down and fly away after five weeks.

Naturalists have studied these birds for a long time. Nicholas Aylward Vigors described the Platycercus group in 1825. He chose the crimson rosella as the main type for the group.

Early settlers in New South Wales saw the eastern rosella. They called it the Rosehill parrot. Later, the name changed to "rosella." Scientists use DNA to learn more about them. Studies in 1987, 2015, and 2017 helped show how different species are related.

There are six species of rosellas in this group.

They are often grouped by the color of their cheeks. Some have blue cheeks, like the Green rosella. Other species have white cheeks or yellow cheeks. The western rosella is a bit different from the others. Most males and females look the same. However, the young birds of some species look different than adults. For example, young blue-cheeked birds have green feathers.

Many people enjoy keeping rosellas as pets in aviaries.

These birds can live for more than 20 years. They are very bright and pretty to look at. You should keep them in their own cage. This is because they can be aggressive toward other caged birds. In a home, they can eat fruit like apples, pears, and grapes. They also enjoy eating vegetables like lettuce, grass, and silver beet.
