Cockatoos are a special group of parrots. There are 21 different species in the family Cacatuidae.

These birds are mostly found in Australasia. This includes places like Australia, New Guinea, and the Solomon Islands. They also live in the Philippines and parts of Indonesia.

Most cockatoos are larger than other types of parrots. However, the cockatiel is much smaller and slimmer.

You can recognize them by their curved bills and their crests. A crest is a group of feathers on their head. They raise these feathers when they land or feel excited.

Eating is a very interesting thing that happens with a cockatoo. They like to eat seeds, fruit, and flowers. They also eat insects and things called tubers or corms.

To eat a seed, they use a special way of working. First, a large muscular tongue holds the seed in place. Then, the lower jaw applies pressure to the seed. The upper jaw acts like an anvil to help. This allows the bird to de-husk the seed easily. Their strong bill also helps them climb through tree branches.

Scientists have studied these birds for a long time. George Robert Gray first defined them as a group in 1840.

Later, experts like Joseph Forshaw classified them as a full family in 1973. We also have very old clues about their history. A fossil of a cockatoo was found in Australia. This fossil is from the Early Miocene period. That was between 16 and 23 million years ago.

There are many different kinds of cockatoos to learn about. Some are black, like the five species in the genus Calyptorhynchus.

Others are white, like the 12 species in the genus Cacatua. The palm cockatoo is a very large black species. It has a strong bill and red cheeks.

The pink cockatoo is another beautiful species. Some cockatoos, like the galah, have pink tones in their feathers.

Even the smallest, the cockatiel, is a very popular pet.

Cockatoos live in ways that might remind you of other animals. Many species are monogamous, which means they stay with one partner.

They often build their nests inside hollow holes in trees. Because they need these holes, losing old trees is a hard job for them. Some cockatoos have even learned to live near humans. This can sometimes make them a nuisance to farmers.

People also enjoy keeping them as pets in aviculture. However, meeting all their needs can be a difficult task.
