The grey crowned crane is a large bird from Africa.

It is a very special bird with many beautiful colors. Most of its feathers are grey. It has white cheeks and a bright red throat pouch. On its head, it wears a crown of stiff golden feathers. This bird is an omnivore, which means it eats many things. It eats plants, seeds, and grain. It also eats animals like insects, frogs, snakes, and small fish.

These cranes have a very interesting way of working. To find food, they stamp their feet on the ground. This movement flushes insects out of the grass so they can eat them. They also walk near animals like antelopes and gazelles. These large animals move through the grass and find food. When they do this, they often disturb prey for the cranes to grab. At night, the cranes go to sleep in trees. They can do this because they have a long hind toe. This toe helps them grasp branches just like a hand.

Scientists use many names to describe this bird. Some people call it the African crowned crane or the golden crested crane. It is a close relative of the black crowned crane. For a long time, people thought they were the same species. Now, experts know they are different. They can tell them apart by their calls and their feathers. They also use genetic evidence to show they are separate. There are even two different types, called subspecies, within the grey crowned crane.

There are many specific facts about where these birds live. The East African subspecies lives in Uganda and Kenya. It also lives in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This bird is so important that it is the national bird of Uganda. You can even see it on the Ugandan flag.

The other subspecies is the South African crowned crane. It lives from Angola all the way south to South Africa. These birds live in dry savannahs and wet marshes. They can also be found in grassy flatlands near lakes.

Watching these cranes can be a wonderful sight. They have a special way of dancing to show courtship. This dance includes bowing and jumping. Both the males and females participate in the dancing. Sometimes, large groups of 30 to 150 birds gather together. When they breed, they build large nests out of grass in wet areas. Both parents help sit on the eggs for about 28 to 31 days.

Once the chicks hatch, they can run almost immediately. This makes the grey crowned crane a very active and lively bird.
