They belong to the family Gruidae, which includes 15 different species. These birds are known for their long necks and long legs. They often have a streamlined body shape that helps them move. Most cranes have gray or white feathers with black markings.

When cranes fly, they do things differently than many other birds. Instead of bending their necks into an S-shape, they stretch them out straight. They also stretch their long legs out behind them as they glide.

To make their loud calls, cranes use a special windpipe called a trachea. In some species, this trachea is very long and goes through the breastbone. This helps make their voices much louder.

Their calls can actually travel for several kilometers to reach other birds. Some cranes even use bare patches of skin on their faces to communicate. These patches can change color or grow larger when the bird is excited.

Scientists have studied cranes for a very long time. The family name Gruidae comes from the genus Grus. A scientist named Carl Linnaeus gave the common crane its name. He used the Latin word "grus," which simply means crane.

We also have fossils that tell us about their past. These fossils suggest that different groups of cranes were distinct 35 million years ago. Some of these ancient groups lived in the Old World.

Cranes are very smart about what they eat. They are opportunistic feeders, which means they eat whatever is available. They might eat grain and berries during one season. In another season, they might hunt for fish, insects, or small rodents.

They even dig in the mud to find roots and tubers. When it is time to have babies, they build nests in shallow water. Both parents work together to help the young chicks grow.

Sadly, human activities have made life hard for many crane species. Some, like the whooping crane, needed special laws to help them survive.
