Amazon parrots are medium-sized birds with short, rounded tails. They belong to the genus Amazona, which includes about 30 different species. Most of these parrots are a bright green color. They often have vivid accent colors on their faces or wings. These colors change depending on the specific species. These birds are native to the Americas, ranging from Mexico to South America and the Caribbean.

These parrots have a very specific way of eating. They use their heavy, strong beaks to crack open hard nut shells. They also eat seeds, fruits, berries, and even nectar from flowers. Many species supplement their diet with leafy matter. To help them eat, they hold their food with a foot. In the wild, mainland parrots usually forage for food twice a day. They often feed their young one hour after sunrise and again before sunset.

Scientists have studied these birds for a long time. A French naturalist named René Lesson introduced the genus Amazona in 1830. Later, an Italian zoologist named Tommaso Salvadori named the mealy amazon in 1891. The name "Amazona" comes from the 18th century. A man named the Comte de Buffon gave them this name. He believed the birds lived in the Amazonian jungles.

There are many interesting facts about how these birds live. An average amazon parrot has a body temperature of 41.8 °C. Their hearts beat very fast, between 340 and 600 times every minute. Some parrots can live for a very long time in homes. One yellow-crowned amazon lived for 56 years in captivity. Many species are now threatened in the wild. About 18 of the 31 species are listed as threatened or extinct. This happens because of habitat loss and the pet trade.

Amazon parrots are very social and smart animals. They often travel and sleep in large groups. Many amazons can mimic human speech and other sounds. They even seem to enjoy human music and singing. In the wild, some groups use vocal dialects. A dialect is a special way of speaking used by a specific group. This is similar to how humans use different languages in different places.
