Macaws are a group of large, colorful parrots from the New World. They belong to a group called the tribe Arini. Most of these birds live in forests, but some prefer woodlands or savannahs. You can find them in Central America and South America. Some also live in Mexico. They are very popular as companion birds in homes. However, many species face hard jobs in the wild today.

These birds have very special bodies. They have large beaks and long tails. Most macaws have a patch of bare skin on their faces. This facial patch is unique to every single bird. It is just like a human fingerprint. Macaws are also zygodactyl. This means their first and fourth toes point backward. This helps them grip things very well.

People have known about macaws for a long time. Ancient people in the American Southwest even farmed them. They used them in places called feather factories. Other groups like the Inca and Nazca used bright feathers for art. They made beautiful things like feathered panels and clothing.

There are 19 known species of macaws. Some are very large, like the hyacinth macaw. Others are small, like the red-shouldered macaw. Some birds, like the Spix's macaw, are likely extinct in the wild. The glaucous macaw might also be extinct. Many macaws are endangered because forests are being cut down. Illegal trapping is also a big problem for them.

Macaws eat many things like seeds, nuts, and fruits. In the Amazon, they do something very interesting. They visit river banks to eat clay. These places are called clay licks. Scientists like Donald Brightsmith have studied this in Peru. They found that macaws eat the clay to get sodium. Sodium is a type of salt. It is hard to find salt far away from the ocean.
