Heliconia

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Heliconia are bright, tropical plants that many people find beautiful.

There are 194 known species of these plants. Most live in the tropical Americas. A few species grow on islands in the western Pacific. Some also live in Maluku, which is in Indonesia. People grow many species as ornamentals to decorate gardens.

Because they look like other flowers, some people call them false bird-of-paradise. Other people use names like lobster-claws or toucan beak.

These plants grow in many different ways. They are herbaceous, which means they do not have woody stems. They can grow between 0.5 and 4.5 meters tall.

Their leaves are very long and can reach 300 centimeters. These leaves grow on nonwoody petioles, which are the stalks that hold a leaf to a stem. The leaves can form large clumps as the plant gets older. The leaves also help the plant by absorbing sunlight for photosynthesis. This is how the plant uses light to make its own food.

The flowers of the heliconia are very special. They grow on long parts called panicles.

These panicles can stand up straight or hang down. The flowers have brightly colored, waxy bracts. Bracts are leaf-like parts that surround the true flowers. These bracts can be red, orange, yellow, or green. The flowers produce a lot of nectar to feed visitors. This nectar helps attract animals that move pollen around.

Many animals rely on heliconia to survive. Hummingbirds are the main visitors to these flowers.

Some hummingbirds, like the rufous-breasted hermit, even use the plants for nesting. In the Solomon Islands, a bat called Melonycteris woodfordi visits the flowers at night. This is a rare way for these plants to be pollinated. Other animals use the leaves for shelter. The Honduran white bat makes a tent out of heliconia leaves. It cuts the side veins of the leaf to make it fold. This tent protects the bat from the sun and the rain.

Scientists have studied these plants for a long time. Carl Linnaeus gave the name Heliconia in 1771. He took the name from the Greek word Helikṓnios. This word comes from Mount Helicon in Greece.

Heliconia is part of a group called the order Zingiberales. It used to be part of the banana family, known as Musaceae. Now, scientists place it in its own family called Heliconiaceae. These plants are very old. They started appearing during the Late Eocene, about 39 million years ago. They are the oldest group of plants pollinated by hummingbirds.
