Melastomes are a huge family of flowering plants. Most of them live in warm, tropical places. Two-thirds of their groups come from the New World tropics. This family includes about 175 different genera. There are also about 5,115 known species in this group. They can be small herbs or larger shrubs. Some melastomes even grow into small trees.

You can often spot these plants by their leaves. The leaves have a very special look. They have three to seven long veins. These veins run along the length of the leaf. They might start at the very bottom. Sometimes they branch out from a middle vein. This pattern is called venation. The leaves also grow in pairs on the stem.

Scientists use special systems to group these plants. One system is called the APG III system. Under this system, seven groups from Memecylaceae were added. Now, there are 169 accepted genera in the family. This count was recorded in July 2025. These groups help us understand how plants are related. It is a way to organize the many species.

Some melastomes can be invasive species. This happens when they move to new areas. They grow in places outside their normal home. This can happen in tropical or subtropical lands. Examples include Koster's curse and Miconia calvescens. Pleroma semidecandrum is another example. These plants can change the land around them. They grow very well in these new spots.

Many living things rely on these flowers. Many stingless bees visit them to forage. One specific bee is named Melipona bicolor. This bee gathers pollen from the plants. Pollen is a food source for the bees. This shows how plants and insects work together. It is a helpful link in nature. The flowers grow singly or in groups.
