The Asteraceae is a huge family of flowering plants.

It contains over 32,000 known species. These plants live in many different places. You can find them in hot deserts or cold regions. They grow on every continent except Antarctica. This family is very important to humans. It provides us with food, garden plants, and medicines. Some species can even become weeds in new lands.

Most of these plants are herbaceous, which means they are soft and green. However, some members are shrubs, vines, or even trees.

Many have taproots to stay in the ground. Some have underground stems called rhizomes. Their stems are often branched and cylindrical. Some stems even have tiny hairs on them. Some plants in this family contain a sticky liquid called latex.

The most amazing part is the flower head, or capitulum.

It looks like one single flower from far away. In truth, it is a composite of many tiny flowers called florets. Some are ray florets, which look like long petals. Others are disc florets, which sit in the center.

These florets sit on a base called a receptacle. Small green scales called bracts protect the head while it grows.

Plants use clever ways to spread their seeds. Many have a structure called a pappus. This is a set of tiny hairs or bristles.

The pappus acts like a little parachute. It helps the wind carry seeds to new places. This is how a dandelion spreads its white, fluffy seeds. Some plants even move their flower heads to follow the sun. This helps them catch more light and attract more insects.

Scientists first described this family in the year 1740. They originally called it Compositae. This name reminds us that the flowers are composites. The word aster comes from a Greek word meaning star. This describes how the flowers look like celestial bodies with rays.

Fossils of these plants are very old. Some pollen grains come from the Late Cretaceous period. This was millions of years ago in Antarctica.
