Asterales

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Asterales is a large group of flowering plants found all over the world. You can find them in hot deserts or even cold, frigid zones. Most of these plants are small and soft, called herbaceous species. However, a few can grow into large shrubs or trees. Examples include the giant lobelia and the giant groundsels. These plants are very important to our world's plant diversity. They make up about 14% of all eudicot plants.

These plants work in special ways that set them apart. Instead of using starch for food, they use a molecule called inulin. This is a way they store energy for later use. They also have unique stamens, which are the parts that make pollen. These stamens often grow in a tube around the style. This shape helps with pollination, which is how plants make seeds. Pollen gets collected and stored along the length of the pistil.

Scientists have studied these plants for a long time. The name Asterales has been used since at least 1926. This was part of the Hutchinson system of plant naming. In the past, some systems only listed one large family. Newer systems like APG II and APG III have expanded this. Today, we know there are 11 different families in the group. The largest family is Asteraceae, which has 25,000 species.

These plants have a very old history on Earth. They likely began during the Cretaceous period, between 145 and 66 million years ago. They may have started on the supercontinent Gondwana. This huge landmass later broke apart into several modern continents. Some scientists think the group started between 116 and 82 million years ago. We do not have many fossils to prove the exact age. However, we have found old pollen and seeds from millions of years ago.

Many plants you know come from this group. You might eat lettuce or a bright sunflower at dinner. Some plants, like chicory, are also in this group. Others are used as spices or even traditional medicines. For example, the genus Chrysanthemum provides pyrethrum. This is a natural insecticide used to stop bugs. Another plant called wormwood is used to flavor a drink called absinthe.
