Asterales

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Asterales is a large group of flowering plants. Most are small plants, but some are big trees or shrubs. You can find them all over the world. They live in hot deserts and cold areas.

One big family is called Asteraceae. This group has about 25,000 species. They have composite flowers. These flowers look like one big bloom. But they are actually many tiny florets joined together. Another large group is the Campanulaceae. These are known as bellflowers. They have about 2,000 species.

These plants share special traits. They use inulin to store food. Inulin is a type of sugar. Most other plants use starch for food instead. They also have unique stamens. Stamens are the parts that make pollen. In these plants, the stamens often form a tube. This helps move pollen.

People use many Asterales plants. Sunflowers and lettuce are in this group. You can eat them. Some plants are used as medicine. Others are used as spices. One plant is used to make a natural insecticide. This is a way to stop bugs from eating crops.
