Fagales

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Many famous trees belong to one group called Fagales.

This group includes oaks and walnuts. It also has beeches and birches. You might know pecans or chestnuts too. The name Fagales comes from the word Fagus. Fagus is the name for beeches.

Most plants in this group use the wind to grow. This is called wind pollination. They have flowers that are unisexual. This means the flowers have only one sex.

Scientists study how these plants are related. They use a system called molecular phylogenetics. This is a way to study plant family ties using tiny parts of cells. New studies show how the families fit together.

We can also look at very old plants. A fossil flower was found in amber. Amber is hard tree sap that turned into stone. This flower is called Soepadmoa cupulata.

It looks like a mix of different plants. Scientists think the first Fagales were like the southern beech.
