These plants grow in many places. Many live in the Northern Hemisphere. Some live in cold areas. These trees are deciduous. This means they drop their leaves every year. Other species live in warm, tropical areas. These trees are evergreen. They keep their leaves all year long.

Most of these plants make nuts. The nuts grow in a cup-like part called a cupule. In oaks, the fruit is a nut called an acorn.

Most acorns sit in a small cup. Other nuts live in a spiny or scaly husk. These nuts help feed wildlife like birds and mice.

Humans use these trees in many ways. We use the wood for floors and furniture. We even use cork from bark to stop wine bottles.

Some trees have faced hard times. A sickness called chestnut blight can kill young chestnut trees. This makes it hard for them to grow large.
