There are about 500 different species of oaks. Some stay green all year. Others drop their leaves in the fall.

Oaks produce nuts called acorns.

Each acorn sits in a small cup. It can take 6 to 18 months for an acorn to grow. The leaves and acorns have a bitter acid. This acid helps protect the tree from bugs and fungi.

These trees are very important for nature. They are called a keystone species. This means many other living things need them to survive. More than 950 kinds of caterpillars live on oaks. Many tiny wasps also live there.

People use oak in many ways. The wood is very hard and strong. It is good for making furniture. People also use oak to make barrels for drinks. The spongy bark of the cork oak makes wine bottle stoppers.
