They grow in many parts of the world. Some trees grow very tall. The American chestnut can reach huge heights. Other types, like chinkapins, stay small like a bush.

In late spring, the trees grow flowers called catkins.

Some catkins have male flowers. These make pollen. Other catkins have female flowers. These make the fruit. You need two trees to make nuts. The pollen must move from one tree to another.

The nuts grow inside a prickly shell called a burr. This shell is very sharp. When the nuts are ripe, the burr splits open. This lets the nuts fall to the ground.

Each nut has two skins. The outer skin is a hard, brown shell called a pericarpus. Under that is a thin skin called a pellicle.

Many animals love these nuts. Squirrels, deer, and birds eat them for food.
