In the spring, the tree grows flowers. The male flowers are in small bunches. We call these long, thin shapes catkins. The wind helps move the pollen. The tree makes fruits called acorns.

These acorns grow in small groups. They sit in a shallow cup. The tree is an alternate bearing species. This means it makes large crops every other year.

Many living things live on this tree. It supports over 400 types of insects. Some insects make galls. A gall is a small growth on a plant.

Some galls look like spongy balls. Birds like jays eat the acorns. Jays help the tree grow. They bury acorns in the ground. This helps new trees start. People also use the strong wood for furniture.
