Ulmus minor

life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The field elm is a very special tree. It grows mostly in southern Europe. It can live near rivers in low lands. It can also live in dry soil.

This tree can grow to be 30 meters tall. It has a round top. The bark on the trunk is rough. Young branches might have small, corky wings.

The leaves are smaller than other elm trees. This is why its name is "minor." You can see tiny black dots on the leaf veins. You might need a magnifying glass to find them.

Field elms can live for a long time. Some trees in Greece are very old. One tree in France lived for over 650 years! It died from a sickness called Dutch elm disease. This disease is a big problem for these trees. Scientists are now studying them. They want to find trees that can fight the sickness. They hope to plant new elms in our towns soon.
