This tree has a very special inner bark. The bark is slimy or mucilaginous, which means it feels slippery. Native Americans ate the bark raw or boiled. People also use it to make tea. This tea can help a sore throat. It can also help an upset stomach. Some people use it on their skin for rashes.

In the spring, the tree grows small flowers. These flowers are moved by the wind to make seeds. The seeds are shaped like small wings. Each seed has tiny red-brown hairs on it.

The leaves change color with the seasons. They start red when they first grow. They turn dark green in the summer. In the autumn, they turn a dull yellow. The wood inside the tree is reddish-brown. The wood is very strong. It can even be used to make bows for archery. It is also good for making wagon wheels. This is because the grain of the wood locks together. This makes the wood hard to break.
