The silver maple is a very large tree. It grows very fast. You can find it in the eastern United States and Canada. Many people call it a water maple. This is because it likes to grow near rivers and wet lands.

Its leaves are long and wide. They have five parts called lobes. The bottom of each leaf is a soft silver color. A light wind makes the leaves shine.

In the spring, the tree grows many flowers. In the summer, it makes seeds. These seeds have wings. The wings help them fly or float on water. This tree is a busy home for many animals. Squirrels eat the buds in the spring. Birds and chipmunks eat the seeds. Some animals even eat the bark.

People use the wood to make many things. It is light and easy to work with. It can make paper, floors, and even musical tools. The bark on old trees is gray and shaggy. On young trees, the bark is smooth and silver.
