The silver maple is a very common tree in North America. It grows in the eastern and central United States and southeastern Canada. You might hear people call it a water maple or a swamp maple. This is because the tree often grows near rivers and in wet lands. It is a deciduous tree, which means it loses its leaves every year. This tree grows much faster than many other types of maples.

There is a special way this tree moves its leaves. The leaves are long and wide with five lobes. They have long, thin stalks that hold them up. The undersides of the leaves are a soft, downy silver color. When a light breeze blows, the leaves flip over. This shows the silver color to anyone watching. In the autumn, the leaves usually turn a pale yellow. Some trees might even show orange or red colors.

This tree has a very interesting way of making seeds. Most maples make their fruit in the fall. However, the silver maple and the red maple make fruit in the spring. The fruit is called a samara, which is a single-seeded part with a wing. These wings are about 1 inch long. The seeds are heavy, so they often travel by water. They can also fly through the air using those wings. Seed production usually starts when the tree is 11 years old.

Many different animals rely on the silver maple for food and homes. In the spring, squirrels eat the large, rounded buds. This helps them when other nuts are hard to find. Chipmunks and birds like to eat the seeds. Even deer and beavers will eat the bark. The hollow spaces in the trunks can hold many animals. Raccoons, owls, and woodpeckers often live in these cavities.

People have used this tree for a very long time. Native Americans used the wood to make baskets and furniture. Some groups, like the Cherokee and Mohegan, used the bark for medicine. The wood is light and easy to work with. This makes it good for making paper, floors, and musical instruments. After World War II, many cities planted them near streets. Now, some cities do not use them because the wood can break easily in storms.
