It is also called the Asiatic elm or the dwarf elm. This tree grows in many places around the world. You can find it in North America, Argentina, and southern Europe. It has become naturalized in many parts of the United States. This means it grows there on its own now. The tree is usually small to medium in size. It often looks very bushy.

Its bark is a dark gray color. The leaves are green in the summer. They change to yellow in the autumn.

This tree has a very interesting way it works. In early spring, it grows small flowers. These flowers bloom for only one week. They grow in tight bundles on branches from last year. The wind carries the pollen from flower to flower. This is called wind pollination. After the flowers, the tree makes seeds. The seeds are inside flat parts called samaras. These samaras are whitish tan in color. The wind helps carry these seeds to new places.

Small birds like the tree sparrow may eat these seeds.

People have studied this tree for a long time. A man named Peter Simon Pallas described it in the 18th century. He found specimens in the Transbaikal region. Many different groups have studied how it grows. In 1954, J. Went wrote about the tree and Dutch elm disease. Scientists in the United States also study it. The USDA used the tree to help after the Dustbowl disasters. They planted it in shelter belts across the prairies. This was because it grows very fast. It can also handle drought and cold weather.

There are many facts about how this tree lives. In its native home, it may live 100 to 150 years. In other climates, it might only live 60 years. One giant tree in the Gobi desert was very old. In 2009, a tree there had a huge girth. It may have lived for more than 250 years. The tree likes lots of sunlight to grow. It does not like wet ground or shade. It grows best in well-drained soil. Some trees in the US reach very high heights. One national champion tree was measured in Michigan in 2011.

Even though it is tough, the tree faces many hard jobs. It can be hurt by many insects and parasites. One example is the elm leaf beetle. It can also get sick from powdery mildew. In the United States, it can be an invasive species. This means it spreads into new areas very quickly. It can mix with native trees like the slippery elm. In the Netherlands, people had to remove some elms. They did this to protect the local plants. In some places, people grow it as a bonsai. This is a tiny tree grown in a small pot.
