The red maple is a very important tree in North America. It is one of the most common trees in the eastern and central parts of the continent. Many people call it the swamp maple or the soft maple. It is even the state tree of Rhode Island. People love to plant these trees in their yards for shade. They also enjoy the bright red leaves that appear in the autumn.

This tree has a very clever way of growing in different places. It can live in wet swamps or in very dry soil. The tree changes how it grows its roots to match its home. In wet areas, it grows short roots that spread out wide. In dry areas, it grows a long, deep root called a taproot. This helps the tree find water when the ground is thirsty. It can even survive being flooded for 60 days without damage.

Scientists have studied how these trees grow and change over time. They found that red maples are very good at growing in many types of soil. The trees can grow in soil made from many different rocks. Some trees start to grow flowers when they are only four years old. Most trees begin blooming by the time they reach eight years of age. These flowers appear in late winter or early spring. They are often red and come before the leaves appear.

There are many interesting facts about the size of a red maple. These trees can grow to be 115 feet tall. In the southern Appalachians, they can sometimes grow even taller. The tallest red maple was found near Sevierville in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It reached a height of 145 feet. Another very large tree was found near Armada, Michigan. That tree was 110 feet tall and had a very thick trunk.

You might see them in a park or a garden near your home. In a forest, they help make the environment more diverse. While they can grow very fast in young forests, they live quietly in old forests. They are a steady and wonderful part of the natural world.
