It grows in the hardwood forests of eastern Canada and the eastern United States. These trees are famous for their bright autumn colors. You might see leaves that are bright yellow, orange, or even a glowing red-orange. Sometimes, a single tree shows all these colors at once.

This tree is a key part of the forest ecosystem. It can live for a very long time. Some sugar maples live for 200 years or even up to 300 years.

Making maple syrup is a fascinating thing that happens in the spring.

First, people tap the tree by drilling a hole through the phloem. The phloem is the part of the tree just inside the bark. This allows the clear sap to flow out into a container. Next, the sap is boiled in a large pot. As the sap boils, the water evaporates into the air. This leaves behind a thick, sweet liquid called syrup. It takes 40 gallons of sap to make just 1 gallon of syrup.

Scientists and foresters study these trees to understand how they grow.

The sugar maple needs a cold winter to stay healthy. It requires a hard freeze to enter a state called dormancy. This is a period where the tree rests. The seeds also need very cold temperatures to break their coating. They must face 45 days of temperatures below 32 degrees Fahrenheit. After the winter, the seeds grow slowly when the soil warms up in the spring. This specific need for cold makes them unique among many other trees.

There are many specific facts about how a sugar maple looks.

These trees can grow to be very tall, sometimes reaching 115 feet. A tree that is 10 years old is usually about 15 feet tall. Their leaves have five lobes and are shaped like a hand. You can tell them apart from Norway maples by their clear sap. Sugar maples also have brown, pointy leaf buds. Their fruit consists of pairs of winged seeds called samaras. These seeds are globose, which means they are shaped like a ball.

People use the strong wood from these trees for many everyday items.

Because the wood is so tough, it is used to make bowling pins and bowling alleys. You might also see it used for the floors of NBA basketball courts. Many baseball bats are made from sugar maple instead of ash wood. Musicians love this wood for making guitars and violins. Some wood has beautiful wavy patterns called curly maple. This special wood is used for very expensive musical instruments. It helps the instruments make a bright and clear sound.
