Sassafras trees are special plants found in eastern North America and eastern Asia.

They belong to a group called Lauraceae. These trees are deciduous, which means they drop their leaves every year. This happens based on how much rain falls in their area. Sassafras trees are known for being very fragrant. Every part of the plant has a strong scent. The bark can be smooth and orange-brown or even yellow.

One tree can even grow three different types of leaves. You might see oval leaves, mitten-shaped leaves, or three-pronged leaves on the same branch. This makes them very interesting to look at in the woods.

Many animals rely on the sassafras for food. The tiny, yellow flowers have six petals. These flowers grow on different trees depending on the species. For example, Sassafras albidum has male and female flowers on separate trees. The fruit is a small drupe that turns blue-black when it is ripe. Many birds love these fruits, including wild turkeys and northern mockingbirds. Other animals like white-tailed deer eat the leaves and twigs. Even rabbits will eat the bark during the winter months.

Beavers might even cut the stems to use for their own needs.

Humans have used sassafras for hundreds of years. The name "sassafras" was used by Nicolas Monardes in 1569. A botanist named Jan Presl first described the genus in 1825. Early European colonists learned about the plant from Native Americans. Some tribes called it winauk or pauane. Native Americans used the leaves to help treat wounds. They also used different parts of the plant as medicine for fevers or skin issues. In China and Europe, people used the strong wood to build ships and furniture.

It was even used as a tool for cleaning teeth.

There are four different species in this group. Three of them are still alive today, but one is extinct. The extinct one is called Sassafras hesperia. Scientists found its leaves as fossils in Washington and British Columbia.

The living species live in different places. Sassafras albidum grows from southern Ontario in Canada down to Florida and Texas. Sassafras tzumu is found in many parts of China. Sassafras randaiense grows in Taiwan. The largest known sassafras tree is located in Owensboro, Kentucky. This tree is very large in both height and circumference.

Sassafras is linked to many things we use every day. You might have tasted its flavor in traditional root beer. For a long time, it was a main ingredient in those drinks. However, the US Food and Drug Administration banned its oil from mass-produced foods in 1960. This was because the oil contains safrole, which might cause cancer. Today, the plant is still useful in other ways. The oil can be used to make certain insect sprays. Some people also grow sassafras as an ornamental tree just to enjoy its pretty leaves and lovely smell.
