Safrole is a clear, oily liquid that comes from many plants. It has a very sweet smell, much like a candy shop.

This substance is part of a family of natural products called phenylpropanoids. You can find it in many different spices. These include nutmeg, cinnamon, and black pepper. It also lives in the sassafras tree. In these plants, it works as a natural antifeedant. This means it helps stop bugs from eating the plant.

Scientists use a special way to get safrole from plants. One method is called steam distillation. They use steam to pull the oil out of the root bark. For example, sassafras oil comes from the root bark of the sassafras tree. This oil can contain about 90% safrole by weight. After that, they dry the oil with calcium chloride. Then, they use a vacuum to separate the safrole out. This is a careful way to collect the liquid.

People have been studying safrole for a very long time. In 1844, a French chemist named Édouard Saint-Èvre found its formula. Later, in 1869, Édouard Grimaux and J. Ruotte gave it the name safrole. They saw how it reacted with a substance called bromine. In 1884, a German chemist named Theodor Poleck studied its structure. He thought it was made from benzene. By 1888, Julius Wilhelm Brühl found its exact group of atoms. These scientists helped us understand how this liquid is built.

Safrole is used to make many other important things. It is a precursor, which means it is a starting material for making something else. It helps make a scent called piperonal. It is also used to make an insecticide synergist called piperonyl butoxide. This helps bug sprays work better.

Safrole is also used to make the drug MDMA. Because of this, many countries have strict rules about it. It is even listed as a controlled chemical in the United States.

In the past, safrole was used in many foods. It was an additive in root beer and chewing gum. People also found it in toothpaste and soaps. However, things changed in 1960. The US FDA banned safrole from being used in food. This happened because studies showed it could cause liver damage in rats. Today, sassafras products in the US do not have safrole in them. We use it mostly for science and making other chemicals instead.
