You can find it in spices like nutmeg, cinnamon, and black pepper. It is also in the sassafras tree. In these plants, it acts as an antifeedant. This means it helps stop bugs from eating the plant.

People have studied safrole for a long time. In 1869, two chemists named it. They found it in essential oils. Scientists can get safrole from plants using steam distillation. This is a way to use steam to pull oil out of bark.

Safrole is used to make many other things. It helps make scents for perfumes. It is also used to make a tool for bugs called an insecticide synergist.

This helps other bug sprays work better. However, safrole can be dangerous. In 1960, the US FDA banned it from food. This was because studies showed it could cause liver damage in rats. It is also used to make the drug MDMA. Because of this, many countries have rules about how people can use it.
