These trees grow in North America and East Asia. They are deciduous. This means they lose their leaves every year. Sassafras trees are famous for their smell. All parts of the plant are fragrant. If you crush the young leaves, they smell like citrus fruit.

The leaves are very special. One tree can have three different leaf shapes. Some are oval. Others look like mittens. Some have three prongs. Many animals enjoy eating parts of the tree. Birds and bears eat the blue-black fruit. White-tailed deer eat the leaves. Even rabbits eat the bark in winter. People have used sassafras for a long time. Native Americans used the leaves to treat wounds. They also used the plant as medicine. In the past, people used the wood to build ships. They even used twigs as toothbrushes. Today, the oil from the tree is used in some insect sprays. However, the US government banned its use in mass-produced food. This is because the oil contains safrole, which may cause cancer.
