Young trees have smooth, thin bark. As they grow old, the bark becomes dark and bumpy. These trees can live for 258 years.

Small white flowers grow on the tree. These flowers turn into dark red fruit. Birds and bears eat the fruit. This helps the tree spread to new places.

The tree is also a home for many insects. It hosts the caterpillars of over 450 types of butterflies and moths.

The tree has a clever way to stay safe. It makes special chemicals called cyanogenic glycosides. These chemicals can turn into cyanide, which is a poison. The seeds and the leaves have these chemicals. This helps stop animals from eating them. However, the flesh of the fruit is safe to eat. The flesh does not have the enzymes needed to make the poison. Enzymes are parts of the plant that cause changes.

People use the wood from these trees to make furniture. This wood is often a bright orange color. It is very valuable for making cabinets.
