These plants can be small herbs. They can also be large shrubs or trees. Some species grow very tall. The ombú is a tree from South America. It grows on open grasslands. This tree gives shade to the land.

The stems can be red, pink, or green. The leaves are pointed at the ends. Flowers grow in long groups on the stems. These flowers turn into round berries. The berries start green. Later, they turn dark purple or black.

Many parts of the plant are poisonous to mammals. This includes the roots, stems, and berries. However, birds can eat the berries safely. The seeds have very hard shells. The seeds pass through the birds whole. This helps the plants spread to new places.

Some people use these plants for food. They must prepare them in a special way. For example, they may boil the leaves three times. This helps remove the parts that make people sick. You should never eat the roots.
