Phytolacca

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Phytolacca is a special group of plants found all over the world. They grow in North America, South America, and East Asia. You might know them by names like pokeweed, pokebush, or pokeberry. Some people even call them inkberry or ombú. The name comes from Greek and Latin words. The Greek word "phyton" means plant. The Latin word "lacca" refers to a red dye.

These plants have many different ways of growing. Most are small herbs or shrubs. However, some species like the ombú grow into large trees. These trees have very soft wood. They can hold a lot of water inside. This helps them survive through droughts or grass fires. The ombú grows on the open grasslands of South America. It is a famous symbol in Uruguay and Argentina.

Watching a Phytolacca plant grow is quite interesting. The stems can be green, pink, or red. They grow flowers in long groups called racemes. These flowers start out greenish-white or pink. Later, they turn into round berries. The berries begin as green fruits. Eventually, they ripen into a dark purple or black color.

Many parts of the plant contain things that can make mammals sick. These include the leaves, stems, roots, and berries. Scientists have found toxins like phytolaccatoxin in them. Because of this, people must be very careful. In the southern United States, some people eat poke sallet. They must cook the leaves in three different changes of boiling water. This helps remove the harmful parts. You should never eat the roots because they cannot be made safe.

Even though they are toxic to us, birds love these berries. Birds can eat them without getting sick at all. The seeds have very hard outer shells. These seeds stay whole as they move through a bird's body. This helps the plant spread to new places. This same process happens with box turtles too. Even fossils show that similar plants lived long ago. A fossil found in Mexico looks like a Phytolacca fruit.
