The flowers bloom in the spring or early summer. Most flowers are purple. Some are white, pink, or yellow. These flowers grow in large groups called panicles. Many types have a strong smell.

After the flowers bloom, the plant makes fruit. The fruit is a dry, brown capsule. When it is ripe, it splits in two. This lets out two seeds. These seeds have wings to help them fly.

Lilacs are popular in gardens. They like soil that drains well. If you cut the branches, the plant grows new leaves. But it may not grow flowers. This is because the flowers grow on old wood. Some moths use lilac leaves for food. People also use lilac wood for woodturning. This is a way to shape wood on a machine. The wood is quite hard.
