Ash trees are large plants in the olive family. We call this group of plants a genus. There are 45 to 65 different types of ash trees. Most of them drop their leaves in the autumn. Some types stay green all year long. You can find these trees in Europe, Asia, and North America.

Ash leaves grow in pairs. The seeds look like small keys. These seeds are actually a type of fruit called a samara. Many ash trees are dioecious. This means male and female flowers grow on separate plants.

Ash wood is very strong and elastic. This means it can bend easily. People use this wood for tool handles. It is also used for electric guitars and drum shells. Some companies even use ash to make frames for sports cars.

In the past, fossils show ash trees lived 49 million years ago. Today, some ash trees face big problems. A beetle called the emerald ash borer eats the inner bark. This stops the tree from moving water and food. This beetle has killed millions of trees in North America.
