These plants grow in many parts of the world. They live in the Americas, Asia, and Europe. This family includes walnuts, pecans, and hickories. Many people farm these trees for food. China grows most of the world's walnuts. The United States grows the most pecans.

These trees have special uses. Walnut wood is a dark brown color. Woodworkers use it for cabinets and furniture.

Hickory wood is very flexible. People use it to make bows and tool handles. Some trees even have sweet sap. Native Americans used this sap as a sweetener.

Animals help these trees spread. Squirrels and birds move the seeds. Squirrels bury nuts for the winter. They often forget where they hid them. This helps new trees grow in new spots. Some trees, like the Black walnut, make a chemical called juglone. This chemical stops other plants from growing near them. This helps the walnut tree stay healthy.
