These plants have unique flowers called catkins. Catkins are small and often look like fuzzy tails. These flowers are monoecious. This means one tree has both male and female flowers. They make a lot of pollen. The wind helps carry this pollen to other trees.

Many of these trees are very useful to people. Hazels grow nuts that we can eat. Some birches have bright, colorful bark. They are also used to make pretty gardens. The wood from these trees is often very hard. In the past, people used the wood for tool handles. They also used it for large water wheels. Today, we often use metal instead of wood for those jobs. Scientists believe these plants first began in China 70 million years ago.
