The Betulaceae family is a large group of living things.

This group includes 167 different species. It contains six main types, called genera. These include birches, alders, hazels, hornbeams, hazel-hornbeams, and hop-hornbeams. Most of these plants live in the temperate Northern Hemisphere. A few species even grow in the Andes mountains in South America.

These plants have a special way they make new life. Their flowers are called catkins. These flowers are often small and hard to see. They are monoecious, which means one tree has both male and female flowers. The flowers have large, feathery parts called stamens. These parts make a huge amount of pollen. Because they make so much pollen, they rely on the wind to carry it.

Scientists have a long history of studying these plants. In the past, people split them into two different families. They called one group Betulaceae and the other Corylaceae. Now, experts use a new system called the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group. This group says they are actually two subfamilies within one big family. These two subfamilies are named Betuloideae and Coryloideae.

We can look back in time to see where they started. These plants likely began in central China about 70 million years ago. At that time, the area had a Mediterranean climate. This was because of the Tethys Sea. Most of the six modern groups lived in this region. Many of the 52 species found there are endemic, which means they are found nowhere else.

Humans have used these trees for many different jobs. The common hazel and the filbert grow nuts we can eat. Some birches are grown in parks because of their bright bark. The wood from these trees is often very hard and tough. In the past, people used hornbeam wood for cartwheels and water wheels. They also used it for tool handles and chopping boards. Today, we often use metal instead of wood for these tasks.
