Proteaceae is a large family of flowering plants.

Most of these plants live in the Southern Hemisphere. You can find many of them in Australia and South Africa. This group has about 83 genera. It also has about 1,660 known species. They are part of a larger group called the order Proteales. This order also includes plane trees and the sacred lotus.

These plants come in many different shapes and sizes. Some are tall forest trees. Others are small bushes or even herbs.

Many have special roots called proteoid roots. These are masses of roots and hairs that form a wide surface. They grow in the leaf litter during growing seasons. These roots help the plant soak up nutrients from the soil. They often shrivel up when the growing season ends.

The flowers are often very bright and showy.

Many species have many tiny flowers packed into one big head. This is called a pseudanthium, or a false flower. The flowers use a clever way to share pollen. A part called a pollen-presenter holds the pollen for visitors. The flower parts usually occur in groups of four. The petals and parts are often fused into a long tube. As the flower grows, the style bends until the tube splits open.

People have used these plants for a long time.

The Macadamia plant grows nuts that people eat commercially. Some people also eat nuts from the Gevuina avellana plant. Many species make beautiful cut flowers for bouquets. You might see the New South Wales waratah or the king protea. These plants are very popular in floral arrangements. They are easy to recognize because of their striking colors.

The name of this family has a very interesting history.

A man named Antoine Laurent de Jussieu named the group in 1789. He used the name Proteae. This came from the genus Protea. Carl Linnaeus had earlier linked that name to the Greek god Proteus. Proteus was a deity who could change into many forms. This is a good way to describe these plants. They are very varied and look very different from one another.
