Because these plants vary so much in appearance, they are hard to group with a single simple rule. However, they remain a vital part of many ecosystems across the globe.

Many members of this family use a specialized mechanism to manage pollen.

Most flowers have parts that occur in groups of four. The four tepals, which are petal-like parts, are fused into a long, narrow tube. Inside this tube, the four stamens are also fused to the tepals. This arrangement keeps the anthers, which hold the pollen, enclosed within a cup. The pistil also starts inside this tube, with the stigma trapped at the top.

As the flower develops, the pistil grows very rapidly. This rapid growth forces the style, the stalk of the pistil, to bend. Eventually, the style bends so much that the perianth tube splits open along a seam. This process allows the pistil to be released and stand upright. This specialized structure often features a "pollen-presenter." This is an area on the tip of the style that presents pollen to visiting pollinators.

In many species, the flowers form a compound pseudanthium. A pseudanthium is a "false flower" made of many tiny, individual flowers. These flowers are packed tightly into a compact head or a spike. This creates a large, showy display that attracts animals. While many Proteaceae use this method, some genera like Adenanthos are different. They produce only solitary flowers rather than large clusters.

These plants show incredible variety in their physical forms. They range from small herbs to tall forest trees. Many are medium-sized perennial shrubs. Some species can even be facultatively deciduous, meaning they may lose their leaves. Many plants also possess a lignotuber. This is a thickened part of the stem at the base of the plant.

To help them find food, many species grow proteoid roots. These are dense masses of lateral roots and hairs. They form a large surface in the leaf litter to absorb nutrients. These roots often shrivel at the end of a growing season.

The history of the name Proteaceae is linked to ancient mythology. In 1789, Antoine Laurent de Jussieu named the family Proteae. He based this on the genus Protea. Earlier, in 1767, Carl Linnaeus had named that genus after Proteus. Proteus was a Greek god who could change into many different forms. This is a perfect description because the family members look so different from one another. Scientists like Robert Brown and later researchers like Peter H. Weston have continued to study their complex relationships.

Proteaceae species are also very important to humans.
