However, modern molecular evidence suggests they are not closely related. While they share the cupule fruit structure, they have different pollen and different numbers of chromosomes. Botanists now place Nothofagus in its own separate family called Nothofagaceae. Today, scientists use both physical shapes and molecular data to confirm the family's monophyly, meaning they all share a common ancestor.

Fagaceae species play a massive role in the environment. Oaks form the backbone of temperate forests in Asia, Europe, and North America. They are a primary food source for many animals.
