Podocarpaceae

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Podocarpaceae is a large family of evergreen trees and shrubs. These plants are known as podocarps. They are mostly found in the Southern Hemisphere. There are about 201 different species in this family. They include 20 different genera, which are groups of closely related plants. Some scientists also include the genus Phyllocladus in this group. These plants are very important to the nature of many southern lands.

Most podocarps have a special way of making seeds. They grow fleshy seed cones. A fleshy cone is soft rather than being hard and woody. This seems to be an old trait for the family. Only two groups do not have these soft cones. These groups are named Pherosphaera and Saxegothaea. Most other members use these fleshy parts to hold their seeds.

Scientists have studied these plants for a long time. Before 1970, people only recognized seven genera in this family. These were Podocarpus, Dacrydium, Phyllocladus, Acmopyle, Microcachrys, Saxegothaea, and Pherosphaera. Later, researchers looked at leaf shapes and DNA. They found that the group Podocarpus was actually made of many different types. They decided to split them into eight new groups. This helped scientists show how the plants are truly related.

These plants have a very long history on Earth. The oldest clear members lived during the Jurassic period. Some were found in England and others in Patagonia. Modern groups first appeared during the Early Cretaceous period. The family grew much larger during the Cenozoic era. This era is when they reached their highest diversity. Today, they are found in many places like New Zealand and Tasmania. They also grow in South America and parts of Asia.

Podocarps are linked to the history of our planet. Many of them lived on a huge land called Gondwanaland. This land once held South America, Africa, and Australasia together. When Gondwanaland broke apart, the plants were separated. This led to many new species growing in different places. One very strange plant is Parasitaxus usta from New Caledonia. It is a parasitic gymnosperm, which means it takes food from another plant. It lives on a plant called Falcatifolium taxoides.
