Pandanaceae

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Pandanaceae is a large family of flowering plants. These plants grow in warm, tropical lands. You can find them from West Africa to the Pacific. This group includes 982 known species. They are very important to many parts of the world. These plants help feed people and provide useful materials.

These plants come in many different shapes. Some are tall trees or small shrubs. Others are vines or lianas that climb. Some are epiphytes, which grow on other plants. Their leaves are very long and narrow. These leaves often have prickly edges. Some stems even have aerial prop roots that grow in the air.

Finding out how these plants are related is a big job. Scientists use DNA sequencing to study them. This is a way to look at the plant's tiny building blocks. Before this, some groups were part of the Pandanus genus. Now, scientists know Martellidendron is its own separate genus. This helps us understand how plants moved across the world.

There are five main groups in this family. These are Benstonea, Freycinetia, Martellidendron, Pandanus, and Sararanga. The Pandanus group is the most important one. It includes species like Pandanus amaryllifolius and karuka. These plants likely started a long time ago. They may have begun during the Late Cretaceous period.

People use these plants in their daily lives. In Southeast Asia, people use the fruit for food. Some leaves are used to add flavor to meals. In Central Africa, people use certain species to make mats. The flowers are very small and lack a perianth. This means they do not have colorful petals. Instead, they have tiny parts like stamens or ovaries.
