Pandanus is a large group of living things. It includes about 578 different species. These plants can be small shrubs or medium trees.

They are native to warm, tropical places in the Old World. Many people call them screw palms or screw pines. They are not actually related to palm trees. This group is the largest in its plant family. These plants are very important to many cultures. In the Pacific, they are almost as important as the coconut.

These plants have a very clever way of growing. Many species grow near the ocean in sandy soil. They grow thick stilt roots near the base of the stem. These roots act like anchors to hold the plant up. This helps them stay steady against strong winds and salt spray.

The leaves are long and shaped like straps. Some leaves even have sharp spines on them. The plants are dioecious, which means male and female flowers grow on different plants. The female plants grow round fruits that look like pineapples. These fruits can stay on the tree for over 12 months.

We can learn about the history of these plants from fossils. The oldest known fossil is called Pandanus estellae. It was found in Queensland, Australia. This fruit fossil is from the Oligocene epoch. That was about 32 to 28 million years ago.

Scientists use DNA to study how they changed over time. They found two large groups called Clades I and II. The split between these groups happened during the early Miocene. Other smaller groups split later during the Middle Miocene Climatic Optimum.

There are many specific facts about where they live. The greatest number of species live in Malaysia and Madagascar. They can grow from sea level up to high mountains.

Some species have a special layer of water storage tissue. This is called hydrenchyma. It helps them live in places that do not get much rain. Many species spread by using water. Their fruit can float to new islands. Animals like bats, rats, crabs, and elephants also eat the fruit. This helps the seeds move to new places.

Pandanus is useful in many ways every day. In Southeast Asia, people use the leaves for cooking. They add a lovely smell to rice and sweets. Some people call them the "vanilla of Asia."

In the Pacific, people weave the leaves into mats and ropes. They even make clothing and baskets. In Hawaii, the dried leaves are used for weaving. People in New Zealand used similar plants for these same skills. Even the fruit is a staple food for some groups, like the Shompen people.
