Figs belong to a huge group of plants called Ficus. This group includes about 850 different species. They can be woody trees, small shrubs, or even climbing vines.

Most of these plants live in warm, tropical areas. Some grow in slightly cooler areas too. Many people grow them for their tasty fruit. The common fig is the most important one.

Other species are eaten as local bushfood. Figs are also very special in many cultures. People often use them for worship or practical jobs.

Most figs have a very strange way of growing fruit. Instead of a normal flower, they have a syconium. This is a hollow, fleshy part shaped like an urn.

Inside this shape, there are many tiny flowers. These flowers grow on the inner walls. To make seeds, the plant needs a tiny wasp. The wasp crawls through a small hole called an ostiole.

Once inside, the wasp moves pollen to the flowers. This helps the flowers turn into tiny fruitlets. Eventually, the whole fleshy part grows into the fruit we see.

Scientists have spent a long time studying how these plants are grouped. In 1786, Carl Peter Thunberg first divided them by their leaves.

Later, Friedrich Miquel grouped them into one single genus in 1867. In 1965, a scientist named E. J. H. Corner changed the groups again. He looked at how the plants reproduce to organize them. Today, experts use genetic methods to see how they are related. These modern studies help us understand the history of the Ficus family.

There are many amazing facts about the variety of figs. The Indian banyan can grow to cover over one hectare. One hectare is about 2.5 acres of land.

On the other hand, Ficus nana stays very small. It never grows taller than one meter. Most species live in the Indo-Australasian region. About 511 species are found there. This makes it the main center for fig diversity. Southeast Asia and Borneo are also very important places for them.

Figs are a vital part of life in the forest. They are a key food for many animals. Fruit bats, monkeys, and many birds eat them.

Some birds, like pigeons and hornbills, eat figs almost all the time. Even caterpillars feed on the leaves of fig trees. This helps the whole ecosystem stay healthy. The relationship between the fig and the wasp is called mutualism. This means both the plant and the wasp help each other survive.
