The Urticaceae are a large family of flowering plants. People often call them the nettle family. This group includes about 2,625 different species. Most of these plants live in warm, tropical areas. You can find them in many places around the world. Many live in tropical Asia. Some members are small herbs like Parietaria. Others are shrubs like Pilea. A few are even large trees like Cecropia.

Many plants in this family have a special way to stay safe. They use stinging trichomes, which are tiny hairs on their leaves. If an animal touches these hairs, they break. This embeds a sharp tip into the skin. The hair then releases an irritating liquid. This liquid contains compounds like histamines. These cause a skin reaction that feels itchy or painful. This is a clever defense against animals that might try to eat them.

Scientists have studied these plants for a long time. We can find clues about them in the fossil record. Fossils of their fruits, called achenes, were found in Central Europe. These fossils come from the Late Cretaceous period. In the Cenozoic era, scientists found fossil leaves in the Allenby Formation. These leaves had distinct stinging hairs. For a long time, people thought they were different plants. Then, researchers like Devore and his team realized they were actually stinging plants.

There are many interesting facts about how these plants grow. The largest group is Pilea, which has 500 to 715 species. The genus Urtica has about 80 species. These plants use the wind to make new life. Their flowers are often unisexual. When the parts holding pollen dry out in the heat, they snap. This causes the pollen to release in a swift motion. This allows the wind to carry the pollen to other flowers.

Humans have found many uses for these plants throughout history. Some species are used for food or traditional medicine. For example, the soap nettle is used for rope and food. In Brazil, species like Cecropia obtusa are used as medicine. The common stinging nettle, Urtica dioica, is also used for health issues. It can help with things like arthritis or eczema. While the stings can be unpleasant, they are rarely dangerous to people.
