Araceae

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The Araceae are a huge family of flowering plants. Many people call these plants aroids. There are about 3,750 known species in this group. They live in many places around the world. You can find them in the New World tropics. They also live in Old World tropics and northern temperate regions. This family includes 114 different genera.

Most aroids have a very special way of growing flowers. The flowers grow on a spike called a spadix. This spadix often looks like a corn cob. A leaf-like part called a spathe grows around the spike. The spathe might only partially cover the spadix. In some plants, the male and female flowers are separate. These plants are called monoecious. The female flowers usually sit at the bottom. The male flowers sit at the top of the spike.

Some aroids can actually make their own heat. This process is called thermogenesis. Their flowers can reach temperatures as high as 45 °C. This happens even if the air is much colder. The heat helps attract insects like beetles to pollinate them. It also protects the plant from cold weather. Some plants like the titan arum use heat to spread a smell. This smell can be like rotten meat to attract flies.

Scientists have studied these plants for a long time. Theophrastus made some of the earliest observations of these species. People did not see them as a separate group until the 16th century. In 1789, Antoine Laurent de Jussieu classified them in his book. Later, Heinrich Wilhelm Schott made a major system in 1858. He used the shapes of the flowers to group them. Adolf Engler made a different system in 1876. He looked at the plant's body and its parts instead.

This family has plants of all different sizes. The titan arum has the largest unbranched flower spike in the world. On the other hand, duckweed is very tiny. It has the smallest flowering plant and smallest fruit. Some aroids are even used for food. People eat the starchy corm of the taro plant. However, eating them raw can be very dangerous. They contain tiny crystals called raphides that sting the mouth.
