The Lauraceae are a huge family of plants.

This group includes about 2,850 known species. They live in warm places like Southeast Asia and South America. Most are evergreen trees that stay green all year. Some are shrubs or even deciduous trees that lose leaves.

A special group called Cassytha are parasitic vines. These vines live on other plants to survive. This family is very important for many tropical forests around the world.

Many of these plants have a special way of growing. They often have leaves with a thick layer of wax. This makes the leaves look very shiny and glossy. The leaves also have a pointed shape called a drip tip. This shape helps the plant shed water quickly in rainy areas.

Some plants in swamps grow special roots called pneumatophores. These roots grow upward to breathe above the water. Other species use toxic sap to protect themselves. This sap can poison or scare away hungry animals.

Scientists are still learning about how these plants are grouped. This task is called taxonomy. It is hard because the family is so diverse. Some experts use the way flowers look to group them. Others look at the anatomy of the wood and bark. One way to group them is into two subfamilies. These are the Cassythoideae and the Lauroideae.

Scientists use DNA tests to try to find the best groups.

This plant family has a very long history. Some scientists think they started 174 million years ago. Fossils of these plants have been found in the United States.

Many species are used by people every day. The genus Cinnamomum gives us cinnamon and cassia for cooking. The genus Persea gives us the avocado fruit. We also use bay leaves from the Laurus genus. Some plants are used to make perfumes or medicine.

Nature has many ways to move these plants around. Many species produce drupes, which are fleshy fruits with one seed.

Birds love to eat these fruits. When birds eat them, they spread the seeds in new places. Monkeys, rodents, and even fish also help move the seeds. This helps new trees grow in different parts of the forest. This teamwork between animals and plants keeps the forest growing.
