The Annonaceae are a large family of flowering plants. They include trees, shrubs, and sometimes climbing vines called lianas. Many people know them as the custard apple family or the soursop family.

This group is very big, with about 2,400 known species. There are 108 different genera, which are groups of related plants, in this family. Most of these plants live in warm, tropical areas of the world. About 900 species live in the Neotropics, while 450 are in the Afrotropics. The rest are found in the Indomalayan region.

These plants have many interesting parts that work together. The bark, leaves, and flowers often have a strong, pleasant scent. The leaves grow in an alternate way, meaning they do not grow directly across from each other. Most flowers have six petals arranged in two layers. Some flowers can have as many as fifteen petals. The flowers also have many stamens, which are the parts that make pollen. These stamens often form a ball or a flat shape. The fruits can be single berries or a group of fruits joined together.

The seeds inside are often oily and have a bright, fleshy cover.

Scientists have studied these plants for a long time to understand them. The oldest fossil found belongs to a genus called Futabanthus. This fossil comes from Japan and is about 89 million years old. This tells us the family has been around since the Late Cretaceous period. Researchers use DNA and the shape of the plants to group them. They have found four main subfamilies within the Annonaceae. One large group is called Annonoideae, which includes the genus Annona. Another large group is called Malmeoideae.

Many species in this family produce fruit that people enjoy eating. Some famous examples are the cherimoya, soursop, and sweetsop. The American pawpaw is another type found in the Eastern United States.

People have even used flower petals for flavoring. For instance, the petals of the sacred earflower were used to flavor chocolate. Today, people still use dried petals to flavor coffee and other drinks. However, some parts can be dangerous. The seeds and leaves contain acetogenins, which are natural compounds. These can be harmful to the brain if they are eaten.

It is easy to see how these plants connect to our daily lives. You might taste a custard apple or see a soursop in a store. You might even smell the lovely scent of a ylang-ylang flower.

These plants show us how much variety exists in the tropical world. They also show how science helps us learn about food and health. By studying their history and their parts, we learn more about nature. This family is a great example of the amazing things found in the tropics.
