Theaceae

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Theaceae family is a group of flowering plants. It includes many different shrubs and trees. Some of these plants are very important for people to use. The most famous is the tea plant. Other plants in this group are used as ornamentals. This means people grow them in gardens for their beauty.

Most plants in this family have very specific traits. Their leaves are often simple and shiny. The edges of the leaves are usually serrated, which means they have tooth-like bumps. Most of these plants are evergreen. This means they stay green all year long. However, a few types like Stewartia are deciduous. These plants lose their leaves each year.

The flowers are often large and showy. They are usually pink or white. Many of these flowers have a strong scent. They also have many stamens. Stamens are the parts that hold pollen. These plants have a special kind of pollen called pseudopollen. It has tiny ribs or circular shapes on it.

Scientists have studied these plants for a long time. They found a fossil called Pentapetalum trifasciculandricus. This fossil is about 91 million years old. It might belong to this plant family. Today, many genera are recognized. Eight genera are currently accepted by scientists. These include Camellia and Thea. Some species grow in Southeast Asia and China. Others live in the Southeast United States.

Humans have changed how these plants grow. We used artificial selection to help them. This means we picked certain plants to grow. We chose the tea bush for its special chemistry. The leaves have caffeine in them. Caffeine makes up 2.5 to 4 percent of the dry leaf weight. Other parts of the family have different things. Some have tiny crystals of calcium oxalate. Others have special acids like gallic acid.
